Before you go
Ocean pools are filled by the sea, so most need regular cleaning. Waverley's pools close once a week to be drained and refilled: Bronte Baths closes on Wednesdays, and the North Bondi Children's Pool and Bondi Icebergs close on Thursdays. Randwick's pools at Clovelly and Coogee have no fixed cleaning day.
Any ocean pool can close when big swells wash over the walls. If the sea looks rough, expect the pools to be closed too.
The free ones
Bronte Baths, the North Bondi Children's Pool, Clovelly, Giles Baths and Ross Jones are all free. Bondi Icebergs, Wylie's Baths and McIver's charge a small entry fee.
Always swim between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach, and ask the lifeguards about conditions. Beach safety, with pictures
